The special drawing right is an international reserve asset, created by the IMF in 1969 to supplement the official reserves of its member countries.

  Comprehensive definition of the term special drawing right

The value of the SDR is based on a basket of key international currencies reviewed by IMF every five years. It is currently composed of the United States dollar, the Euro, the Chinese Yuan, the Japanese Yen and the British Pound.
