A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character alpha-numeric code that uniquely identifies legal entities that engage in financial transactions.

  Comprehensive definition of the term Legal Entity Identifier

Registration and renewal of LEIs are made through so-called Local Operating Units (LOUs), which are accredited by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF).
Once issued a LEI is valid for one year, and needs to be renewed each year before its expiry date.
