Medium term notes (MTNs) were initially created in the US.
EMTNs can be viewed as a hybrid between corporate bonds and commercial paper. Like a bond, instruments issued under an EMTN programme can have any maturity. With commercial papers, they share the fact that they can be issued on a continuous basis.
