Concise definition of the term clearing house
A clearing house, also referred to as clearing corporation or clearing firm, operates as a central settlement agent for securities and derivatives operations in a regulated market. Amongst other roles, clearing houses act as counterparty to both sides in each trade closed in the market, thus buying from the seller, and simultaneously selling to the buyer.
