CUSIP is the main identifier for negotiable securities in North America, a bit like the ISIN code is in Europe.
It is composed of 9 alphanumerical characters, which are structured as follows:
Characters 1-6 - Issuer code
Characters 7-8 - Issue identification
Generally, numbers for equities and letters for fixed income. For commercial papers the first of the two characters is letter code of the maturity month, the second is the day of the maturity date, with letters used for numbers over 9.
Character 9 - Check digit
